Heartburn after meals? When to seek medical advice about reflux
Enjoying the local food is part of a stay in Mallorca. But if you frequently experience heartburn after meals or when lying down, it is worth paying attention.
What is reflux?
Reflux occurs when some of the stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in the chest or a sour taste in the mouth, particularly after eating or when lying down.
Occasional discomfort does not necessarily mean you have a medical condition, but recurring symptoms are worth investigating.
Small changes that may help
Avoiding large meals and leaving around three hours between dinner and bedtime may reduce discomfort. It can also help to identify which foods or drinks make your symptoms worse: triggers are not the same for everyone.
When should you arrange an assessment?
Seek medical advice if you have heartburn most days, if usual measures do not help, or if you develop difficulty swallowing, frequent vomiting or unexplained weight loss.
Do not automatically assume that new chest pain is caused by reflux. If it is severe or accompanied by shortness of breath, cold sweats or pain spreading towards your arm or jaw, seek emergency medical care.
Look after your digestive health during your stay
If discomfort is affecting your meals or sleep, a medical assessment can help identify the cause and determine the right treatment.
